Brown Swiss Junior News Update

October  2007

Dear Junior Brown Swiss owner;

Hi, my name is Julie Meisner and I am the NYBSA youth advisor for 2007. After checking both the National and NYS membership roles and finding as many eligible youth as we can,  I would like to take this opportunity to tell all of our Junior Brown Swiss Breeders of our youth programs for 2007; and the deadlines for these contests.  They are coming up fast!

To be eligible for any State contests you must be a member in good standing in the NYBS Association and to qualify for the National awards, you must be a member of the National Association as well.  Remember our state membership is on a yearly basis and costs $5.00 each year. Check out www.nybrownswiss.com to see if you are a current member, if not there is a member form right on the web site.  The National Brown Swiss Junior memberships are a one-time application and are from the age of 9 to 19 as of January 1st of the year.  Applications for the National membership are on line at www.brownswissusa.com/default.asp

Here is a brief summary:

1. Bell Ringers- photo & show-placing contest of junior-owned or leased animals. Picture should be a profile (side) shot of the animal. Animal must have placed 1st or 2nd at county, state or national youth shows.

All the National Bell Ringer rules apply to the State Bell Ringer competition except: Non Professional 5x7 pictures will be accepted for the State Bell Ringer competition only.

Please note: To qualify for National Bell Ringer program, professional pictures will be forwarded to the association for their consideration.

State Bell Ringer Applications must be received by November 20, 2007!

2. We are also offering this year the opportunity for our juniors to compete in New York Production & Cheese Yield contests, which are based on the production of cows owned or leased by the junior. All National rules apply.

NY State application deadline for Cheese Yield and Production is

December 15, 2007!

.

Unfortunately, at this time, I do not have the 2008 Youth Achievement or Ambassador applications.  If you would like to apply, we hope to have these applications on line as soon as we receive them from the National Association.  Let me know and I can mail them or email them to you.

3. NY Brown Swiss Ambassador- any junior age 16 through 19, as of January 1st, interested in being a spokesperson for the New York State Brown Swiss Association.  Deadline December 15, 2007.

4. Youth Achievement-the ultimate award considering the junior’s cattle management and youth activities in the Association and in the community.

For complete rules; please check out the NY Brown Swiss web site at: www.nybrownswiss.com  or the National Brown Swiss site at: www.brownswissusa.com/default.asp

5. State Fair-For those juniors who were unable to attend the state fair, here’s what occurred: We had a meeting that started off with a Dairy Fear Factor contest where all that participated won and enjoyed a pizza party. We came up with great ideas for activities and making additional monies for those activities. (i.e. Cow Chip Bingo- We were able to sell 110 tickets, yes it is more than the normal 100. But all squares were marked off, so everyone had a chance to get plopped on, with the winner getting $250. The juniors were able to earn $850.00. )

6. National Heifer Show- The National Convention will be in Lima, Ohio, in 2008, and will feature a National Junior Heifer Show.  I believe this is a great opportunity for the juniors to meet and have fun with other juniors that have the same interest that they have. We would like to send a group of juniors and their heifers to participate in the heifer show and convention.

If, you are interested in going to the convention and participating with your animals please let me know. Also, we are looking for possible transportation ideas and fund-raising help from the open membership.   Any help will be appreciated!

7.  All Breeds’ Convention – January 19th, 2008, Holiday Inn Turf, Albany, NY.  All state awards & prizes will be presented!  Stay tuned for more details!

Remember, all of the above state deadlines are different then the National deadlines.
